Top 5 Trends in DTC Reply

Trends in business are constantly changing. That goes double for the Direct-to-Consumer business, especially as of late. While there are elements that stay tried and true dating back to the origins of capitalism, other pieces are constantly in motion, changing day-to-day along with new technology and ideas in other fields. From time to time, it’s a good idea to take a step back and examine what other people are saying about the field. While we at Script to Screen are fairly immersed in DTC, it can help to get someone else’s perspective, while taking your own spin on it.

In October, the website Retail Dive published an article by Alex Song, the CEO and co-founder of the Innovation Department, a “tech-empowered startup studio,” detailing his thoughts on the top five trends currently in Direct-to-Consumer. As it turns out, we agree with a lot of what Alex had to say. It comes down to five key statements:

  1. Online and offline brands are blending.
  2. Traditional retailers are moving into DTC with the help of big data.
  3. DTC brands are on the move to own categories.
  4. DTC brands are embracing Amazon as a partner.
  5. DTC agencies are launching their own brands.

These are all actions that we are seeing every day, both in the general marketplace and within our own clients. The DTC strategy has evolved into a practice that has become much more important for brands, allowing them to enhance their position at retailers while simultaneously creating their own in-house sales. The way that brands have been able to adopt the practices and marry them to new technologies that allow them to more efficiently market and get their products into the hands of customers over the past few years alone has been staggering. 

We feel like going over these trends has helped us re-examine some of our own practices for the better. Knowing that someone else has been seeing what we’ve been seeing in the market is reaffirming, but more importantly, gives us a greater perspective on exactly what is happening in the world of television Direct-to-Consumer.
